Hey guys i just inherited an 86 ranger 2.3L 4x4. its been sitting for 6 years due to a shot transmission. i took out the transmission and put the bell housing back on. Ive been trying to get it to start but it starts to turn over a little and then stops. Any advice on what i could do to get it to start?

Is the battery charged up?

You need to do a few things.
Start by removing all the spark plugs and turn the engine over by hand a few times. Just make sure it's not hydro locked.
Then get yourself a fresh battery. You don't need to go buy a new one, just borrow it from another car you have sitting around (mom's, dad's , big brother, who ever).
Then, make sure you have the flywheel or torque converter on. If you don't it won't run well if at all. The transmission bell doesn't need to be on, but what ever big heavy energy storage device your transmission prefers needs to be bolted to the engine.

I thought the starter bolted to the bell-housing.
