Strange Sound

Occasionally when I start my Ranger I'll get a loud noise that sounds like can of stones being shaken. This only happens when it hasn't been started for a while and the noise only last for a half a second at most. Any ideas?

Sounds to be valve tapping. It more on the issue of oil pressure. When you let it sit for a while, the oil drains out of the filter and channels. But when you start it up, the valves are dry for only a second or two till the oil flows over the cams. A better quality oil filter may help with the issue. Next oil change, use a oil filter with a silcone anti-drain drawback valve.

Sorry, roids are acting up to much for me to provide entertainment to this thread.

Keeping it real--- Next oil change use a different HIGH QUALITY oil filter. Napa Gold Line did the trick with one of our cars that had a severe issue with the HLA's. (Hydro-Lash-Adapters--mini lifters in the rocker arms) We pulled the filter off the last shop used, changed the oil, and put a Napa Gold Line filter on it (it's made by WIX). The backflow seal is higher quality, and ensures the oil doesn't drain back through the lines.

I agree with the higher quality filter. Wix, Napa Gold, or Motorcraft. I'm going to add to it, Lucas Stabil-oil. It will thicken things up just a tad and keep it from draining back out of the valve train.

I also forgot to add this, if the oil filter over pressure relief valve is busted or stuck open. That too would cause it. Fram filters are known to do this. And can be easily found out when doing a oil change. Just let the oil drain from the old filter and then give it a little shake. If you feel something rattling inside, chances are the relief valve is busted.
