Whats up guys! been a long time since i got back on here and made any sort of progress lol. Been busy doin stuff to my diesel makin it faster, damn stuff is like doin cocain just more expensive! I also finally moved back down to phoenix and got a much better payin job to pay for my damn exspensive hobbies :yahoo:. This also makes me about 10 min away from the ranger instead of 200 miles away so things should move a bit faster. oh and alden, i still got your axle and gears incase your were wonderin, should have some time comin up to put those in
figured id move my suspension progress here but for those who wanna see the begining here is a link back http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21854&highlight=project+prerunner
well down to what ive got goin on. I got all the heims for my beams and swing set steering heims, but waitin on the chromoly tie rods form dave so i can finally get the front end together. then i jsut gotta find a decent fuel cell so i can start makin the cage. Ill be ordering RadFlow tripple bypasses form dave as well for the rear and then i just have to rebuild the 9". Took me long enough to get back into her but should start movin along
1 1/4" heims on the left and 7/8" heims on the right. these bad boys shouldnt break :D

locker i could prob do in my garage, but i need to red do the body mount so i can run the 64in chebby's. and that takes a welder and more skillz than i think i possess. not to mention the 8.8 brackets that i need to change, and pinion angle i need to set.
it wont be sitting for long. i want to do it in stages. so if your down, i'll come over this week or weekend and whip that rear end in shape?!?!?! joe seems to be more and more busy.
4.0 i'll prob do myself in the garage with some phone calls to you

nope, sold the rhino about three months ago and i wouldnt wanna race that thing again anyhow. my buddy likes doin some of that in his rzr and occasionally we make it out there to race. i may race my new rzr in one but dunno yet. gotta know if mine will be legal

haha its cause she is my pride and joy. im a chevy guy at heart but even i know that in a midsize, you cant beat the price of building a ranger into a full race truck. Plus it makes me kinda stand out in this crowd of ranger owners :D

close! i am building a full race desert ranger with the old school style look and have learned alot through this site on the rangers in general. I was in college for 4 years at NAU and i bought the ranger the last year i was in school. then one month into school i brought it down to pheoinx (200 miles away) to start buildin it. I wound up stayin in flagstaff another year after i graduated due to no jobs in phoenix but two months ago i landed this one and now im ten min away from the ranger and have more cash to spend on her :icon_bounceblue:. i t was all i could do while i was in flag to keep the bills paid with the job i had and the ranger almost got sold twice but i held onto her. So now she will finally start moving along again!

Yay! all the steering parts and my shackle bushings are in! One thing i really like that dave does is he uses the 7/8 heim, in doin this with the size tie rods he uses you tap threads directly into the chomoly tie rods instead of welding in a bung and having to use a smaller hiem like a 3/4. Hopefully if extermination of the termites at the building i work at doesnt take all weekend ill have time to tear into the ranger! :yahoo:

Dave or anyone else who has done this:
Have you experienced any massive amounts of noise from the engine crossmember after trimming it? I did it on mine and you can hear the truck from a mile away(creeking). I am going to weld the crossmember and hope that solves the noise, but has it ever happened before or is my truck "special"?
edit: i am running unequal length beams so my pivots are still inside of the crossmember

This is the first ive ever heard of something like this. why did you trim it to begin with?
Well here are the beams/ radius arms and brackets all on the truck. i also busted the d44 knuckles off the old d44 beams so they will be ready to be put on the truck (not in any pics for today). I still need to get the steering all together but am waitin on a stock pitman arm from a fellow member. I also need to pick up a few more bolts and washers to get everything put back together (missing some bolts for the radus arm brackets and need bolts for the radius-to-beam connection) but wont be able to do that till tuesday since copperstate will be closed tomorrow.
One thing i did notice when settin up the radius arm brackets though dave. was that when i set the passenger side beam to 1/4-3/8" away from the driver side beam bracket bolt, then measured from the body mount rivet to the center radius-to-beam connecting bolt to set up the the driver side. The driver side had to be pulled back so far that the driver side beam would hit the bolt for the passenger side beam bolt on the beam to achieve the same measurement for the passenger side. So i jsut moved it a 1/2" forward to clear the bolt. Shouldnt hurt anything should it? also, without moving it forward, my wheel base on the driver side was 114" and the passenger was 115".

Sounds like you just have a case of common Ford Frame rack attack.. It will be fine how you have but if you want you can double check the measurments. Set the beams so there is 8" between the bottom of the frame and the top of the beam. Thats going to be your ruff estimated ride hieght. Then measure from the corner of the body mount to the center of the "alignment cam holes" to see what you come up with. Its looking good so far!!

oh i got ya. Yeah thats how i measured it and to set it exactly the same i would have to put the driver side beam into the passengerside beam bolt. Ill probably set it another 1/2" forward (1" all together more than the passenger side) so it clears everthing all the way till it hits valley of the engine cross member.
No work done today, buddy got his off shore boat all fixed up so we had some fun on the lake. Ill be goin over to the shop tomorrow night to get the knuckles on and start on the steering.

Did a little bit of stuff today. Mocked the fender up, put the kuckle, bearings, and tire on to see how it would sit at full bump and ride height. Fenders definitly aint wide enough but the tires dont rub! lol Taking the rotors and knuckles down tomorrow to get sand blasted so i can paint them. Also buying new ball joints for the kuckles, new bearings for the driver side, new calipers and pad, gettin all teh grade 8 bolts to finish the steering and radius arm brackets, and some other little odds and ends to finish the front end completely. Then its onto cage! :D:D

hmm definitly! specially if he can do the rears as well cause im sure ill be loosing glass while im out racing. Well the ones on there are 15x8 with a 4.5" back spacing. i think at most ill only be sucking the tire in another 1-2"s which really isnt worth it to me, specially for as expensive as beadlocks can be.

Tomorrow is install of the swingset steering and add a bar to hold her up at ride height till i start the engine cage and can mount the coilovers. I honestly cant wait to start bendin some tube for this thing!!!

Only issue i may have is she is 85 1/4" wide at ride height in the front. Racing specs say no more than 85"s so i may have to add some preload before tech to pass then take it back out :icon_thumby:.
Tomorrow is install of the swingset steering and add a bar to hold her up at ride height till i start the engine cage and can mount the coilovers. I honestly cant wait to start bendin some tube for this thing!!!
Order 2 thin jam nuts for the beams and your good to go.

Well ill be callin ya tomorrow then! plus i wanted to see how far you had got with those billet caps for the d35/d44 hubs :icon_hornsup:.
Well shes back on all 4s! got most of the steering hooked up but found out the piman arm i had gotten from a fellow member is the worng one for my truck. oh well, ill have to pick up another here soon. Other than that i got everything else hooked up and made a a couple peices of tube to hold her up till i can get the coilovers in.
couple questions to those with the d44 kuckles and dave. How did you go about gettin a bolt to fit the steering knuckle bolt hole? the 1/2 bolt that fits in the misalignment spacer is too small to take up the slack in kuckle. SHould i jsut weld up the hole and redrill it? or is there something else im jsut not thinkin of. Also dave, (im sure ill ask you this tomorrow) but when i jack the driverside beam up the tie rod for the steering will hit the swinger for the passenger side tie rod. Ive tried adjusting all the bars and can get it to miss if the wheels are straight but if i try to turn hit hits really bad. Something not setup right?? pics are below if anyone has any ideas. Either way, front end is pretty much finished and now its cage time!! Man i love the way this thing is lookin. just cant get over the old school look with new school underneithe :icon_welder:

You need to flip the driverside steering bracket 180* so the bracket "Taperes" are pointing to the rear of the truck. Once you flip it you will use all 3 steering box bolts. That will give you the clearence you need. For the pitman arm you need a stock one and for the pitman arm and spindles you will need to drill out the spindles and pitman arm. You have 8 sets of 3/4" to 1/2" spacers right? You will need to drill out the pitman arm and spindles to 3/4" then weld in a 3/4" to 1/2" sleave then double sheer.... Also the tie-rod with more bend goes to the driverside spindle just incase you mixed them up and both bends face forward.

well that makes more sense as far as the steering bracket. Yeah the stock one i got from teh member here is the wrong size splines. The one that came with my truck is a drop pitman arm for the lift that was on it so i gotta find a stock replacement now. Yes i have 8 sets of 3/4-1/2" misalignment spacers. I was kinda figurin i would have to drill them out. DO you have any sleaves or a place i can pick them up? if i have to, i have a friend that could tune down some tube on a lathe to make a couple sleaves. Yeah, they are still marked from when you sent them out. the one with the most bend is on the driverside.

All you need is some 3/4" 120 tubing then cut it down to size. If you want you can just drill them out to 5/8" send me 3 sets of the spacers you have back to me and Ill send you out some 3/4" to 5/8" spacers...that way you dont have to weld in a sleeve.

everything but the beams! (daves got way more expereience there and for the price i couldnt go wrong). Ive been fabbing things for the last 4 years on the side for fun. Ive built a few rzr and rhino cages, bumpers for trucks, roof racks, put long travel on a few trucks, built 2 full desert race rhinos (back before the rzr became king), and a few other things here and there. This is the first full race desert truck ill be building and am not rushing it. gunna make it come out nice and dont wanna skimp corners :icon_welder:

haha well ill only be racing 7200 on the few courses i like of theirs as well as when i have the money, BITD rapes the smallers guys on trying to race in their series. So i wont be racing that competitvly. I do wanna race SNORE, MORE, and Whiplash 1450 though and should be alot of fun on the courses ive seen. honestly its my favorite part! it jsut seems to make the whole truck come together plus i get to design it how ever id like (with a few stipulations) and gie the truck its unique look. I just think its so cool how you can take a straight peice of pipe, bend it, cope it, and weld it to make your own custom vehicle in a sense. Though it can be pretty time consuming :D

thanks man. i had it all goin the way i wanted too but its time to start thinkin about my future and the playin has to stop on a few things. The ranger is my only project. ive been doin stuff to my 20 duramax, changing things on my suzuki samurai rock crawler, and puttin a little cash into my polaris rzr. Soemthing had to go and since the ranger wasnt near as close to finished as my other projects, it has to go....
