rear drum brakes?

does anyone know if there is any rhyme or reason to which rangers got 10" brakes versus 9" brakes? is is based on ring gear size or wheel base or was it just a spur of the moment decision on the assembly line? i may be wasting my time trying to figure out fords thinking?

I've always thought it was standard on supercab models but I dont have anything to back that up.

I assume the 10 inch brakes came on the 8.8 axles, but I don't know for certain.

i guess im just lazy. i posted this in gen. disc. and it was moved to the brake section, so i decided to check the tech library and low and behold, the determining factor is gross vehicle weight. if its under 4580 lbs it gets 9 inch. if its over 4580 it gets 10 inch. but that still doesnt answer whether or not its is related to axle sizes or not?

From the Tech Library: "Limited slip rear axles and vehicles with a GVWR over 4580 pounds use a 10-inch drum."

I guess that's why I have 10 inch drums -- I have a 3L73 8.8".

Are there any 7.5" L/S axles?

Yes, there are 7.5 inch (factory) limited slip axles. Though almost every one of them is worn out and behaves just like an open diff.

There are also factory limited slip Dana 28s, but they are very rare.

but a L/S is fairly easy to repack. i just did mine this past weekend with some extra clutches from an exploder axle i pulled. cost was zero cause i had the extras and now its tighter than when new at the factory although it will not last as long.

Most L/Ss are easy to rebuild.

But if you have a 7.5 with 3.73 or higher gears, it's not easy. The side gears won't make it out past the ring gear.

i have a 7.5" axle with 10" brakes. it is a super cab model.

my standard cab short box 7.5 has 10" drums...i dont recall my GVWR, but i think most 4x4's got 10" brakes...

Mine has the 3.73 L/S 7.5 with 10" drums. As MAKG said, it doesn't do a whole lot, but it does get me sideways on rainy days.

i think there was a certain year they made certain reg cabs have 10", probly arouind 1990
