I couldn't figure out why my rebuilt engine was pushing out rear main seals and leaking oil so bad. I got fed up with it and sent it to a mechanic friend of mine. He found the problem.
1. The rear main cap wasn't lined up properly and was leaving the main seal loose.
2. The oil pan seal was wrong, causing a misalignment with the trans.
He has to pull the motor out to fix it, so it cost me $900 to get it back. I wonder how much of the $75 per hour labor charge the mechanic gets?
This was waaay more than I planned on putting in the truck, especially since I was going to sell it or trade it off after Christmas. I think I'll take a huge hit on this one. :icon_surprised:

wow,who rebuilt the engine?at least now you know and we know,i've wondered how you were making out with it.sorry about the $ but i guess at least it's solid transportation again.thanks for updating us.

ouch!!!! glad that its getting fixed but wow thats pricey....

man i had my exploder in a shop, and they wanted $650 just to drop the trans and throw the new one on and another 750 for the new used trans an i only paid 100$ for the truck!!! so i politely asked for the truck back and here it sits getting ready for me to pull her out..

Unless it's a commission shop, the mechanic works for a salary, he gets no extra money unless the shop has a incentive program.

I worked for a commission shop for 4 1/2 years and got 50% of the labor charge, the second shop paid only 35%.
This gives the mech incentive to find faults on the vehicle which is good for everybody but the unscrupulous mech will find the faults that don't exist.

Yep, I'm just glad I have my old truck back. It's an expensive lesson learned, don't get in a hurry when rebuilding an engine. I'm used to SB Chevy's that you almost can't goof them up. I was an auto mechanic many years ago, back when labor was around $30 per hour, and I was paid $10.00 per hour.
