Exhaust

I'm gonna get my exhaust done tomorrow. My trucks an 87 2wd with a 2.3. It already has a Thrush welded muffler on it(cheap knockoff Flowmaster) dumped underneath. It sounds like shit so I was gonna have it run out in front of the rear tire. What size pipe should I run, 2 1/4 or 2 1/2? I'm going to keep the motor stock.

2 1/4 should be more then enough. its not like a stock 2.3 flows a lot anyways. Having an exaust dump undr a vehicle is a bad thing, all the erosive chemicals in the exaust attack the undersite and make a hell of a mess.

Yeah but he has a carb that doesn't have as high of CFM's(right units?) not as much air going in compared to a FI vehicle.(Example: my carb only flows like 240CFM's but when i put the FI on from my T bird the FI unit will flow about 390CFM's) A bigger exhaust only helps if there is more air entering the engine. Also he has a 4 cyl. not a v6. But yeah i would drop it to 2" pipe and put a turbo muffler on it and not a glasspack.

Then just for kicks you could have a 5" stack coming up the passanger side in the bed /w a flame kit.

its a small displacment engine thats gonna stay stock so the real issues with flow is the intake manafold and head, not the exaust

actually ranger5.0 is quite correct. exhaust gas contains some very corrosive chemicals and will greatly shorten the life of your frame and other metal components near the exhaust. on top of that, dumping the exhaust under the vehicle risks trapping a "bubble" of CO2 under the cab and allowing it to seep into the passenger compartment. anyone want a little death with their exhaust?

the amount of CFM an engine moves depends on its displacement and how much power it produces....not its fuel delivery system (carb. or FI).

i wouldnt go any bigger than 2 1/4" piping.
