4x4 problems

I was messing around in some mud over the weekend and put my truck in low lock. I didnt feel like digging it out. It worked great, but when I got back up to the driveway I switched the knob back to 4x4 high and it wouldnt come out of low lock. So I drove around with it in low lock trying to get it in high but it didnt want to come out. I did the normal nuetral roll and it didnt work. I finally threw it in drive then threw it in reverse and it finally came out. Does anybody have any solutions to this?

sounds bout normal sometimes they just get stuck espically if you dont use 4lo much and if you read around what you did by going in reverse is sometimes normal it doesnt sound like anything is wrong unless you sunk the truck and got mud into the breather on the xcase and got some mud in it and that could have done it but if you didnt sink it on my yota(i know iknow thats like comparing apples to oranges) sometimes if i didnt use 4lo much and i used it. it would stick in 4lo and i would have to stop cycle the xcase a couple of times and backup to get it out if it keeps happeing thou i would pull the xcase pan and see what all is going on inside the xcase. keep us informed

Punctuation is your friend...

Did you have the transmission in neutral, foot on the brake before you turned the dial?

If so, it could be the motor is starting to get weak. I would try shifting the proper way and see if it sticks again. Then we can go from there.

There is a lot of understanding on how exactly the pieces inside the T-case move.

In the case of either the manual or the electronic shift t-case the driving mechanism (lever or electric motor respectively) push against a spring which actually pushed the shift forks to move.

The thing is if the driveshafts are under relative tension nothing's going to
move until the tension is released.

driving a distance in reverse with the wheel very slightly turned is better
than backing up straight

I've had my manual T-case stick through several 90degree turns and
finally release with a truck shaking jolt... (these kinds of forces can break things)

Releasing ONE manual hub can do the trick as well

But in general the entire issue is all about "Driveshaft windup" all of
which is explained in the little book "4 wheeling with Ford" that came
in your owners manual package...
