4.0L or 5.0L is in your future... :p

Nothing cheap can be done to improve you engine performance, atleast not noticably. I would start looking into a FI swap or Duraspark swap...

replacing the cam and lifters, headers, holley or 2150 carb upgrade (if it doens't already have the 2150), and the duraspark will just about max out the mods available for your 2.8. i need to decide by next summer if i'm going that route or replace it with something that has more torque and hp.
another thing i did which helped a lot to get the most from my truck was to replace the 4spd man tranny with a 5 spd.

I want a 5spd tranny but they are out of my price range at the moment. When I was doing my v-6 swap I was going to put one in but I couldny find one so I had to settle for the bellhousing and keep my 4spd, but no plans on driving on the highway.

comp cams makes two cams i suggest the .428 lift, or do what im doing and get one custom grinded. go get a 20 dollar 4bbl to 2bbl adapter along with a 390cfm holley, along with NGK spark plugs, MSD street fighter coil, MSD 6al box, 9mm wires, make some custom underdrive pulleys somewhere around 25% or if you wanna get crazy 42%. go to a junk yard grab a turbo and oil hook ups for it weld a adapter for your exhaust manifold, tap your oil pan, and then get water/methanol injection to prevent detenation. and call it a day. put seafoam in it prior to all the suggested mods....it works.
