hours after buying an 88 Bronco 2, Reverse becomes intermittent...

Hi All

Bought an 88 Bronco 2 yesterday.
2.9L 4speed Auto, 4x4, Manual floor Tcase shifter.
Odometer reads 81k, must be at least 181.
I assume it is the A4LD Auto Tranny.

Test drive ran great, Drive and Reverse.
The seller and I went to DMV to transfer the title ran fine, Drive and Reverse.
Took it to my insurance and it ran fine, Overdrive and Reverse.

Stopped at the store later in the day and suddenly there was very little reverse. Had to rev it up a lot for it to slowly move backwards. :annoyed:
Went for a drive at 7pm and had very little reverse.
Got home and reverse was back working fine. :icon_confused:

This morning it ran fine, reverse worked great.
Just drove all around on my lunch hour and stopped a dozen or so times and each time reverse worked great.

So I figure this weekend I'll service the trans with a new filter and fluid.

Anyone have any other suggestions while I'm working on it?

Aww man that sucks bad. I hate getting a used vehicle and immediately having a problem. Youre on the right track with the fluid and filter, start cheap. After that try the computer, if it has one. possibly the tc wasnt locking properly, or it may have been a loose connection on the computer. Or, and i hope this isnt the case, the previous owner knew about it and was trying to unload it on someone before it went.

Still keeping my fingers crossed but so far it seems the filter and fluids seem to be working on the tranny.
I've driven the heck out of it since Saturday and so far so good.....:D
