Heres a quick rundown
I just bought my 83 ranger for $350
It runs pretty good, solid tranny and clutch. reallll nice body
So i did pretty good i'd have to say!
Anyways
I live in CA (HARD EMISSIONS) and before i bought it
the guy took it to smog and it failed but i have all the paper work
It PASSED ON EVERYTHING but the emissions part
noting the bottom that the idle was 1200 and its spec'd at 800?

Now i noticed the car runs a really high idle when warmed up?
And after i drove it home after purchase i noticed the carb was all screwed up the little slider part to open/close the butterfly fell off...

But i fixed that and no change...
But i would love some info so tomorrow morning i can get something going...

it has
New plugs
New wires
New Dist cap

Tomorrow im replacing
2 belts
vacum lines
and do the timing!

But please im new to working on stuff and figured here would be the best place to learn.. so be patient with me and i willl try my hardest to get the hang of it...

On the drivers side of the carb there is a small screw that you can adjust with a small flat blade screw driver to help with the idle. It makes contact with the throttle lever.

A manual would be your best investment right now. That screw mentioned sets the minimum RPM after you let off the throttle. Sorry, but I don't think I'll have time to enter the idel setting procedure - it is governed by the computer.

Don't start replacing parts until you are sure of what is needed.

California smog is a pain, but once it is done, it isn't hard to keep it running right - I live in CA so I know.

I ordered the manual online so its coming...
I took it over to a buddies and he has the same truck so i used his manual in the mean time.
I did the timing on it, changed the belts
it has all new plugs, dist cap, and wires...

Found out that i was missing some e-clips on the left side of the carb put those on...
But now it seems its not dropping in rpms as it should...
I think i might need a carb rebuild... not sure though?

Any other tips guys... im in love with my truck and need to pass smog atleat 1 time to get some plates... so let me know!

Rebuild the carb or get a new(er) one. I live in Indiana so I really dont have to worry about emissions stuff.

Look at the carb on the driver's side, from the front. You will see a solenoid that they call a motor; that, controlled by the computer, change the idle. These carbs can go a very long time without a rebuild.

If you have nothing better to do and some extra money, rebuild the carb - but you will still need the manual to set the idle.

One more thing to try. My PCV valve stopped up and it was stuck at a high idle. Put a new one in and it fixed the prob. no more than about $5 at the parts store.

Thanks danger!

And hey what else causes my idle to stay high...

I start my car and it goes crazy then when i drive it it sputters crazy becuase my carb need to be rebuilt and i tweaked the mixture screws to see if it would run better and it caused sputter...

Im just concerned in one part of the throttle...
There is a pin when the throttle is released i have a feeling the tab offf the throttle is supposed to hit this pin and its not... i dont know though... ill check it out today...
