What brand do you guys recommend for the tranny and transfer case?

What kind of manual tranny?

What kind of manual tranny?

Not too sure. Its got 4 gears plus overdrive used over 45mph. So, 5-speed maybe? How can I tell exactly what type of tranny it is? I looked on the sticker of the drivers door and under trans it says "D"? I think its a Mitsubishi FM145 tranny.

Ok, I know to use ATF in the transfer case and use 80w-90 gear oil in the tranny. But, I was wondering if its ok to use the same gear oil in the tranny that I would use in the diffs? Will the hypoid LS additives harm the tranny? Because all the gear oil I can find have these additives in them.

The mitsubishi transmissions take gear oil

yes you'll be fine.

An '87 Ranger standard tranny will use gear oil.

The only Ranger manual tranny that uses ATF is the Mazda M5OD and those were not used in '87.

All Ranger transfer cases use ATF

Thanks for clearing that up for me guys!

hello,

i know this post is pretty old but i have a related question about it.

i also have an 87 ranger. I bought it with a wrecked trans and now i bought a different one from a friend. ( i dont remember what year it is from) the trans is similar but has small differences on the exterior also the speedometer is off.

Now the stock tranny took gear oil but what kind of oil does this tranny take?

thanks,
wayne

no it is at a slight angle, i looked at the broken one too and that one looks like its flat.

thanks,
wayne
