Re-Gear to 4.88

So i'm looking to re-gear my 93 ranger to 4.88 from 3.73

Well i called up two places to do it, cause its my daily driver and i don't have enough experience to do it:icon_confused:

anyways, one place said they can't do it cause they can't find parts, the other said it would cost 1,500 to 2,000 per axle:icon_rofl: i know that didn't sound anywhere's near right, i was figuring at most a 1,000 per axle, AT MOST... so i was just wondering if anyone has any ideas how much it does cost?
 
Gears and master install kits alone will cost you about $750-$1000. Installation on both axles will be close to $1000 also. It takes a while to get the front axle out to do the work.
 
hmm, well i priced out the parts and it came out be about 700 for the gears and master install kit... so i figured that i'd be spending about 1700 for both not 4,000...
 
Hmmm, go back and look at the pricing I gave you. If you add those up it is $2,000 not $4,000.
 
yeah, i know your price came out to about 2,000 but the place i called said about 2,000 per axle so 4,000 total... thanks
 
$2000 per axle is way too high, I'd say keep looking.
 
Well, I bought the gears and master install kits for ~$700. Install cost me ~$600. That was pretty steep, I could have had them installed for a lot less, but it would have been a 2-3 hour drive to have it done. That original $600 install would have been considerably more but I had a spare rear axle and front pig that everything was set up in.
 
$2000 per axle? You can buy a High 9 axle with an ARB locker, gears and everything all setup for about 2400. That is a total rip off.


Try to find some local wheelers or wheeling club to meet up with. I have found that alot of guys that build their rigs up to an "extreme" can also install gears. They would be likely to help you out at a much fairer price.
 
hell, just get as much research on everything that a gear swap intails and do it yourself. thats what i did and so far so good. i only spent like $160 for parts on the 8.8 and like $220 for the dana 44. and dont buy a notched cross pin for the 8.8, just grind the ring gear.
 
Yeah i went a looked around a bit more hahaha, i knew that the 2,000 per axle was WAY HIGH, i just about started laughin on the phone:icon_rofl: ... but i found a guy here who said it'd be almost 900 for front and back for the labor, i guess its suppose to take almost 13 hrs between the two of em. This guy does good work too! But the parts for the ring and pinion and master install kit run from about 600-900 depending on the brand... which brings a new question:yahoo:

What brand is the better of the three, i've been thinking yukon, as i haven't heard anything bad about em but they are the most money:icon_surprised:

Suggestions on Yukon gears (run about 900 for all), Motive gears(run about 600 for all), or Precision gears(run about 750 for all)

Im gonna be putting 4.88 gears in the stock axles in my ranger, its the 8.8 in the back and the dana 35 in the front... or would it be worth my time to do a SAS instead of the gears in the front? I just don't wanna take out my tranny cause it is an auto :annoyed:
 
i would do it myself, but as my truck is my daily driver i can't let it sit for week while i work on it its my only rig at the moment
 
I've been running 4.56 motive gears in my ranger for 3 years now. I've had no problems with them at all. I've set the rear set up twice now as I swapped from a 28 spline 8.8 to a 31 spline. Both installs went very easily.
 
i bought 8.8 gears in 4.88 for 99 bucks. i made the guy an offer. i thinks hes from "just differentials". the gears were yukon.

as for master install kits, just buy some cheap kits on ebay as long as they have timken bearings, which most do. thats the most important part.
