I am looking into redoing my exhaust(2.3). From the stock header back, side exit before the rear tire. I am going to run a 2" pipe to keep some low end. But am still deciding on a glasspack or flowmaster. I want something that will be loud when I give it gas but not to loud to be annoying during normal driving. Also, I knew this at one time, but how does the placement(further or closer from the engine) of the muffler affect sound?

I would go with flowmaster, never been fond of the glasspack or any of those type of mufflers. I have a 40 series deltaflow on my 3.0 & I love it more each day. It sounds real good & big difference in the tone since my engine has been redone. I am running the 2 1/2 in & 2 1/2 out both are single no duals. As far as placing the muffler to close or to far away, I don't think it matters. Since you are having it exit before the rear tire I would run it a little closer to the front so it won't be to close to the exit. On the 4 cylinders ranger the 40 series sounds to much like a kids honda. The 50 series will give you a good tone and performance for the 2.3. The 40 will make it sound to much like shit, heard way to many of those.
I thought I read sometime ago that you are putting in a 3.0 in your ranger? If so then the 40 series will sound good on that engine. The 40 will be good for any ranger engine as far as the sound not on the 2.3. My flowmaster has been on my truck for about 4 years now & no intensions of changing it.

I have a glasspack on my 2.8, soundwise they really shouldn't be on anything other than a V-8 IMO. The glasspack on my Ranger is getting old, I really don't like literally buzzing around town.

The 3.0 swap plans have been stopped. I want to eventually get an extended cab ranger. That will have the 3.0 in it. As for a muffler, I think I will try to go with a flowmaster of flowmaster rip off. I think it will give me what I want. The biggest I want to go in pipe diameter is 2 1/4" but think 2" will be best.

you know what i like about I4 engines? they are quiet. Juss replace it with a factoty fit exaust, and get a nice tip. then you got some flash, without the pissed off hornet in a pop can sound...thats my .02 cents

a glasspack sounds terrible on a 4 banger. think honda civic :stop:
generally speaking, the closer your muffler is to the motor, the more effective it is.
