This was my DD explorer for the last two years........But with my recent purchase of my F250, i'm going to start wheeling the explorer with the family. My B2 is just not family friendly. So i am using the axles from the B2 and building up the Ex. Plan to run 35's and drive it to events vs trailering like i do with my B2.
Here it is right after i bought, i had already removed the ground effects and put some 31's on it by the time i took the pic.

what did you do in the back for a lift? i just bought my pop a 4inch lift for his 93 sport explorer an picked up some 33s an wheels for it.. i have to swap out the axle for a different gear ratio an was thinking might as well reweld spring perches on top i have read that would give me about 4-5inches of lift?

rear is SOA and 2" Block.......just for now, i plan to get some 63" chevy springs and be rid of the block
Front axle is in
had to Lengthened the front drive shaft to fit
all that is left up front is to finish the bumper and trim some fender and drill to holes in the rear spring mount to frame and bleed the brakes.
Still have to hang shocks in rear, lengthen rear drive shaft, and relocate the leaf spring mounts on the axle, bleed brakes.

I pulled the rear axle back out and relocated the leaf spring mounts (The b2 leafs sat 1 inch wider apart then the explorer. So i needed to move the mounts .5" in so the springs were flat when mounted. Also changed the pinion angle. Removed the old rear shocks and got the brakes bled.
How to quit for the day though, ran out of grinding/cutting discs for the grinder, ran out of oxygen on the torch (Nick i'll exchange the tank on Friday), and i am real low on wire for the welder. And i'm flat broke to boot :(

Yeah i didn't get around to making my driveshaft last nite, so i'll be doing that today at work when i have down time. But i did repack my front bearings, but their toast, so i'll run them for now and replace them in a week or so. But my damn LF hub is racheting so i think i may put the drive slugs in it tonite and buy new hubs shortly. Test Run is tonite, hopefully no issues. Thinking i may get the 35" BFG MTs to run on it tonite. Scheduled for like 4-6"s so the trails should be fun with all the ice under the snow lol.

I did learn that i DEF need to build a front trac bar to help with steering, as well as my gear box is DEF shot to hell. I am not sure if i liked the auto for wheeling though. I like the laziness (lol) of it, but theirs just so much power loss through an auto trans vs a manual. See how it goes, but don't be surprized if i install a 5 spd to replace the pukeLD i have in the truck now.

really surprised you didnt do that with the b2. i think your front shackles are too long as well. my track bar is uninstalled right now and is not too bad with the current setup. truck wont cruise at 100 anymore so its not a big problem these days:icon_rofl:
tore up my front driveshaft last night and need to make new shock mounts...well temp shock mounts. probably gonna try chevy 52's here hopefuly soon, so i was not wanting to shorten my last long driveshaft i have handy as a spare.. kind of apisser cause i will need longer ds up ront when i do the 52's. hows the sag on the sploder springs under the front of the sploder?
big bummer is after i relocated my 6.5 to make room for the bigger radiator i lost alot of steering angle cause the 42's rub the radiator pockets:annoyed:
so i am a lil pissed about that one i think cause i only did it o save money and stay on budget.
and uhhh
been thinkin bout doin a b2 sploder myself these days...maybe a xj on a sploder chassis:icon_idea:

B2 really was never intended to be a street driven truck so it wasn't much of a concern. But the Ex is gonna be street driven so i want it to be better.
The sag isn't bad yet, and i am going to put some 35's on it and take the 38's off, so i'll probably put the stock shackles back on and replace the block in the rear to lower the truck back down.

Going north Friday with the sundowners (local Club) for a snow (mud) run, staying in a hotel with the wife for the weekend. So Aussie Closed at 5pm today per their website
I called at 5:30 and they answered and ended up taking my name/number for an engineer to call me about ordering some pins/springs.
Bill Wright (president) Just called me 8:30pm, told me he didn't want my trip held up or to miss out by not having a locker in my truck. He said if i gave the approval tonite and paid the shipping then 1st in the morning they will ship out my pins/springs overnite and I WILL have them by the latest noon Friday. How and i only have to pay for shipping, so i can enjoy my weekend.
Thats ****ing customer service :thumb:
I have purchased two aussies (one D44 and one TTB D35) And i plan to purchase another D44 aussie for my other axle. I have had nothing but good expeirences with their customer service. Customer Service in the last two years i have noticed has been a forgotten art in business. Glad their are still some companies that appreiciate the customer.

The side walls on most Interco tires (AKA super swampers) are very stiff so they do not show pressure very well and typically laugh at rock rash. They are great tires for trail rigs.

i finally got around to actually doing something with the explorer. Its atleast in the garage now. I hadn't even started it since the Chili run in Feb.
But an update..........
I removed the narrowed 44 and 8.8. Sold those off to a guy in Missouri (yes he drove 9 hours one way to get them from me). And I have taken the full width 44 and 9" from my truggy and I am in the process of installing those into the explorer. My plan is to make it more pavement friendly and able to drive long distance. Oh and I am going back to coil/radius arm susp in the front.
http://www.axcessmypics.com/photos/photo03/b4/d0/89d2146dee92.jpg
I need to shorten the steering, move the axle atleast 2.5" forward from where its at in the pic, and build the trac bar mount on the frame. Run the brake lines and hook those up. Then pull the rear axle back out and relocate the spring perches and hook up shocks and brakes.

Still need to
1. build a crossmember for the radius arms
2. Bleed the brakes better
3. Get atleast two more 35's that resemble the front tires as those TSL's are tubed and dry rotted to hell.
4. Would like to level it out
5. Reuspport the core support on the right side, just a touch crispy and weak.
6. Build front driveshaft and replace the right axle shaft joint

the explorer gots the death wobble...........as soon as it hits 45 mph on the speedo it starts to wobble. I have to jam the brakes to get it to stop around 35 mph but then as soon as it hits 45 mph again it starts.
I think i may have reamed the knuckles to much

Yep, I over reamed the knuckles. When I tightened the castle nut and it got tight, it was getting tight cause it was pulling the tie rod socket against the knuckle. Not tightening the stud to the knuckle.

Are you going to get new bushings installed to take up the slack or going to try to find new knuckles?

All fixed, no more death wobble. Drove it the 30 miles into work this morning for the alignment and tire balance. The RF was 19.5 oz's out and had 2 degrees of total toe lol.

But when i got to work, I touched the 9" at the pinion and it was pretty warm, warmer then I think it should be.
I have to lower my trans/tcase on the crossmember as it is hitting the floor, and still need to replace the RF axle shaft.
Long term i would like to build a new front bumper and replace the Left fender. But for the most part its almost ready for the dunes.

Short term i layed some metal in the tie rod hole and rereamed it. Turns out i didn't over ream it. Just the new tie rods were slightly smaller and didn't notice. The old tie rods i used when this axle was under the truggy were just slightly larger.

When I had the axle under my truggy I was using Tie rods
es2026r and es2027L
I am now using
es2233L and es2234R
the 2026 and 2027 have a larger length of taper and are just slightly larger. The 2233 and 2234 taper isn't as long so it sat lower into the knuckle. Which is why when I tightened up the castle nut it pulled the socket against the knuckle. Which cause the taper stud not to seat fully. But of course I didn't realize that until after I had a good 4 hours into fixing the knuckles.

I swear its like the explorer is scared to go this weekend......
Got it aligned and balanced the tires and seemed all as well. On the way home the speedo quits. So i pull it into the garage and go to pull the little bastard off the tcase. Well it breaks in half flush with the case. So an hour later i finally get the inner piece out only to find the speedo gear on the sensor side is all stripped and broken. I look into the tcase through the hole and see a piece of aluminum. Fish that out and it appears to be a peice of the case that holds a bearing :(. So i pull the tcase out and doing so i manage to dump about a quart of really hot atf all over my chest :(. Get the new tcase in and go to plug the speedo cable in and the end of that breaks off. So i fight with removing that from the instrument cluster for an hour. So the other tcase is in, the other cable is in and now the speedo in the cluster vibrates and varys about 5 mph :fish:
But i did get my trans cross member done.
But the 9" seems to get really hot, after driving about 25 miles and a pretty constant speed, the housing around the pinion is pretty warm/hot. I can hold my hand on the diff but its almost hot enough to where you can't. I pulled the pinion support out and the bearings seem fine. With the brakes off and just the shafts and the 3rd member minus the pinion in the housing the shafts and ring gear seem to spin rather freely. They do not feel rough or drag at all. Last week I changed out the carrier and got a good tooth pattern before I reinstalled it. I guess how hot is to hot....I always figured warm was okay but hot is not.

i had a similar failure.. my speedo stopped working so i pulled the vss, both the drive and driven gears were toast.. the case broke where the clip goes to hold the bearing in.. lame :icon_confused:

good thing i had a spare laying around. So it was a quick replacement and up and running again. But i was playing with the truck tonite in a sand pit and it doesn't like to spin the boggers very easily :(

CheapThrillB2

It had a rope plug in it that worked itself loose while it was aired down to 3psi so i had to change it out with the spare

Gotcha. Quick question. Where does everyone get the shackle attachment points for the bumpers? Make them?

Do you have any soecs on it? Is it just a U shaped piece with a hole in it? How thick is it? Is it one thick plate or is a few thinner pieces welded together?
CheapThrillB2
06-22-2009, 04:04 PM
It was four peices of 1/4" i had water jetted that i welded together.
Or you can buy the stuff here

So i have been running around with a pair of 35x14.50 15 boggers on the rear axle. My rear axle has a spool in it. On the pavement you can hear the tread grabbing and scuffing but no real audible noise and it doesn't really feel like binding on turns in a parking lot.
Well I got some 35" BFG mud terrians. WOW what a difference. Now on any turn at all they bark very loud lol. Taking on/off ramps to the highway they bark. And in the parking lots it extremely loud and you can really feel the bind and hop of the axle and susp in the rear. Amazing how much the tread/lugs of the boggers really gave to the traction vs the much smaller lugs and tread of the BFG's. And I am sure the much smaller contact patch of the BFG's plays a roll as well.
But really happy with the truck. Drove it last weekend almost 250 miles on the high way and yesterday put another 100+ miles of high way on it. Not to mention I have been dd'ing it all week for work etc. But I think it really only has a top speed rigth now of about 65mph.

It was probably it then....the guy that has it now lives in Brighton.
But there is another tan 4dr that is there quite often that is a bit taller and ahs wider tires on it and lots of body lift under it as well as the ttb.

Found out today the explorer is no more......he was jumping it and after about the fifth jump he parked it and walked away only to have it go up in flames :( .....made for a cool video though.
