I've got a 2000 4.0 ranger and i'm gettin a fairly muffled ticking, can't tell where it is coming from, but with stethoscope, the sound can be heard the loudest through the front of the right side valve cover. I haven't pulled the cover yet to check the valves but from myself and several different people, we don't think that the noise is originating from the valves. Also on the same side as the noise, the transfer pipe coming off the headers has a white ashy deposit, like it, at one point had gotten red hot. The noise is not coming from the block, hasn't affected performance. Just wonderin if anyone else had any ideas.

An exhaust leak can sound like tapping sometimes.
