Should air come out of the egr small port?

87 Ranger with 2.9.. When the engine is running, should air come out of the egr small port? The one that is on the driver's side of the egr valve and that the little black vacuum line goes to the little square box (has one electrical plug with two wires) on the upper intake?

mine does but i know my egr isnt quite right. it feels like it must be exhaust because it isnt constant, it kinda 'putts' if you know what i mean

Ditto, that is what mine is doing. Is it supposed to do this? At idle it is stronger feeling.

you should have two hoses going to the DPFE sensor (the little square box). both should be under pressure. if they arent, something is plugged up.

if you follow the "vacuum" lines from the DPFE sensor down, you'll find they connect to the EGR tube, which in turn connects to your exhaust manifold.

mine only has one, actually all 3 trucks i have owned have only ever had one...

The old 2.9s and others has an exhaust pressure sensor that used just one hose. It isn't a vacuum hose it is a high temp silicone hose. Ford had a name for that sensor as well but I never learned it. It is the predecessor to the DPFE.

thanks for clarifying mutant. i was thinking too "new school" (which uses one input on the exhaust pressure side, and one from after the metering orifice inside the EGR tube).

Should air come out of the egr small port?
