Looking into a C5 to replace my A4LD in my Ranger once I get my 289 ready to go.

My C5:
The C5 I am looking at is supposed to have very few miles since being rebuilt.

My C4:
The guy that gave me the 2wd C4 that I have stashed away in the shed said that it is supposed to work, according to the guy he got it from. It has also been sitting for 15 years so I don't have much faith in it. It has been considered a potential bellhousing donar or rebuild core from day one.

The popular thing to do is switch the extention housing from a 4x4 C5 to the C4, but can you put the V-8 bellhousing from a C4 on a C5? I have read the front pumps are different, but I would want to use the C5 one anyway.

Also, I am liking the sound of a B&M Starshifter, but aside from it not mentioning fitting a C5 how do they work in a truck heightwise?

Put the C4 valve body in the C5, use the C4 converter and bellhousing. Now you'll have a transmission to hook to a V8 and use the RBV t-case.

Thanks, that sounds straightforward enough to do. I am going to try to check the tranny out tonight.

i went the other route. We had a 2wd C4 and a 4x4 C5 like you. and put the tailhousing and tailshaft in the C4.

Ideally that is what I would prefer to do... but I don't trust this C-4 any farther than I can throw it at this point. I might change schemes once I start taking the valvebody out and see what it is like inside but I am not holding my breath.

I got it and the 289 for free for carrying it out of a guy's basement...

What did you do for a shifter?

I got there right after he unbolted it from a small block, it already has had the V-8 conversion part done. I even got the stock shifter for it. :yahoo:

I used the rod that was originally on the 4x4 transmission itself (not all the linkage) and cut the end off and used the adjusting part off the 2wd transmission i had. (mine was an '80 t-bird) It slides on the rod with a bolt in the middle to tighten. The linkage isn't 100% lined up but it won't fall out and it reads correctly in the cab.

Just by looking at the linkage on the shifter I think that is what they did, will be hard to say for sure until I get it in the truck though.
