I am working with Mazda 5spd. Is it possible to take a 4x4 tail housing off of a 2.3 tranny then put it on a 3.0 2wd tranny and vice versa? I'm fine with taking it apart, because I want to check if everything is fine. What parts are good to replace? I'm not looking for a complete rebuild just a refresh. Thanks.

you would need to swap the output shaft also, assuming they are the same tranny

If you're asking us what parts to replace, it's over your head.

There is no list. You replace the parts that your inspection shows to be bad.

There is no output shaft. There is a mainshaft. Perhaps that might convey the size of this project. EVERYTHING connects with that mainshaft in some way.

Even though it may be alot of work is it feasible? I mean if I want to go through the transmissions any way and will have them apart....:icon_confused:

It's all in the inspection. That determines whether you succeed or fail.

ok... do you know of any good write ups on inspection of a mazda transmission?

Not really. It's an art. The shop manual has a couple of specs, but it isn't close to complete (nor could it be).

Some buggered parts are obvious -- pitting, missing pieces, grooving, etc.

Some marginal parts are not obvious.
