I have an automatic trans from a 98 3.0 2wd. Is it fit a direct fit for a 97 2.3 2wd? Ive heard yes and no. It should be 4r44e correct?

No.

3.0l and 2.3l have different bolt patterns on the block for transmission mounting, there is no adapter plate for this.

2.3l Lima engine, needs a transmission from another 2.3l OR a 2.0l/2.5l Lima engine.

Yes, 1997 2.3l Ranger should have 4R44E transmission, so would 2.5l
1995 to 2000 2.3l or 2.5l Ranger trans would be 4R44E

Lima engines were used in Rangers from 1983 to 2001, in late 2001 and up 2.3l Duratec engine was used, it also isn't the same as Lima bolt pattern.

Not sure where you would hear yes on that one
3.0l Vulcan engine also has a unique bolt pattern, doesn't cross over to any other engine's pattern.

Rangers engines that did share the same trans bolt pattern were, 2.8l, 2.9l 4.0l OHV, 4.0l SOHC

If you feel up to it you could swap 2.3l 4R44E bell housing to the, 3.0l 4R44E but it does require disassembly of transmission, it isn't a simple swap

they are several variations of the same basic transmission. all the guts are the same, the workings are the same. the case (bellhousing specifically) is not.

I think you were miss reading the "fits" part, those Rangers/Explorers from those years and with those engines all "came with" 4R44E transmission.
Comes with and fits on are not the same.

Actually it says "used in"
The 4R44E and 4R55E were used in the 1995 - 1997 Ford Rangers. The 4R44E were used in the 2.3L and 3.0L Rangers and the 4R55E was used in the 4.0L Ranger.

And

4R44E 1995-2000 4-Cylinder & 3.0L Rangers (2001 w/2.5L) (1995-1996 Explorer w/4.0L)
So "used in" and "fits" are not the same

So the 5 speed from a 1997 2.3 liter should fit the bolt pattern on my 1997 4.0 liter V6 with the 5r55ee automatic? I want to do an automatic to manual conversion,

No. You need a m5od from a 4.0 or 2.9 only. The older 2.8 and 2.9 transmissions would fit, but wouldn't hold up. Anything from a 2.3, 2.5 or 3.0 won't even bolt up.

I'm in this game now too, My 4r443 rebuilt once,is jumping around in the gears and already has beaucoup miles. time to switch over to manual. 96 2.3... so ... I need an m5od from a 2.3 or 2.5 up to year 2000 and its all bolt up,correct? I need everything ,pedals and all,so if somebody on here with the parts wants to make the scratch, I am near Atl,Ga and free to drive to get parts, even shuttle some parts around if need be. contact me direct hawgford@windtream.net.I'd actually like to use a T5 4cyl trans from a mustang ad the motor is goin turbo. Any thoughts on this? This the T6 is 89-93 stang and maybe some rangers same years? Anybody got a part number?
