why do manufacturers turn off the driving lights when you require more light by turning your high beams on ? this is very puzzling

In Ohio at least you can only have four white lights on the front of the vehicle. On my Capri my fog lights are not wired correctly and I was stopped when I had my high beams on (four lights) and my fogs were also on. He told me about the law Ohio law. Many states may be this way that is why the fogs go out when you turn you high beams on.

ok if the high beams and low beams are seperate that would make sense but on my ranger,my dodge and the wifes chevy they're all in the same light and on all of them the driving lights turn off with the high beams

could it have something to do with the amount of draw on the electrical system?
also, it would seem to me, that with the high beams on there would not be much need to have the fog lights on, since it does not help to drive in fog with the high beams on.
What is it lately with everybody driving around with both fog lights and headlights on?

That and the fact that there never/rarely aimed properly is why there are called fag lights in the trucking community.

because they are FOG lights, not driving lights. if youve ever driven in fog, you know how useless high beams are (they reflect off the fog and blind you). if you turn your high beams on, vehicle manufacturers assume you arent in fog so they turn the fog lights off..thus reducing glare for other drivers.

I think if you have your high beams on glare for other drivers is a moot point.

its bad enough with high beams...can you imagine high beams and fog lights?
plenty of people drive around with their high beams on all the time. i cant count how many cars ive pulled into the shop and checked lights on that had high beams on.

I kinda just assume that half the people I see drivin' around with their headlights and fog lights on don't even realize it, and don't know where the switch is... the other half are just selfish bastards.

On my F-150 you have to have the headlight switch turned on to be able to pull out on it to engage the fog lights. But when you throw the stalk ahead to engage the bright lights the fogs automatically shut off.
I always run them when I am in the country, I can get a tad more light out the sides for deer. I haven't adjusted them so they are still aimed low and to the sides like they where from the factory. If nobody is in sight I will even fire up the Hellas for long range deer spotting, but that isn't very often.

I believe Hi HO Silver hit the Bull in the Bulls eye.
It's especielly maddening when you're in a low slung car and the gas-hole comes up behind you at a red light.

When someone comes on us driving our rigs we just hit the 'moose' lights. That gets them to shut off the brights mighty quick. LOL

i deal with this on almost a daily basis while commuting in the escort. im a FWD car in the midst of jacked-up, 4x4, poser country. the trick is to hit the brakes JUST fast enough to collect insurence money...but without hurting yourself :icon_thumby:

I used to hate that with my Laser, don't know what the big kick in doing it is. One of the many reasons I don't have a car anymore.

My apologies for jackin' this thread (I guess I'm one of those selfish bastard types ;) but yeah, it cracks me up when I see some dude, usually in full-size lifted Chevy, that doesn't have a clue they need to readjust their headlights. I think I'm done gettin' mad though, I think I'm gonna get a badge... :buttkick:

It's about the beam pattern.
Fog lights light LOW and close
If they are on with the highbeams there is so much light close to you
that your pupils constrict and that defeats the purpose of having high beams.
SO.. they turn off the fogs with the high beams.
if you want more light get DRIVING lights
Many people use the names "fog" and "driving" interchangeably and
they are VERY different.
