99 Explorer Clutch Questions

I am about to put a new clutch in my 99 expo 4x4 and had a few questions about the clutch to get. The local parts store has a clutch for the truck for about $180 while doing more research I found a clutch kit on ebay for $87. This clutch kit includes:

This complete clutch kit includes:
Brand new A-E HD Pressure Plate ( Non-Self Adjusting _HD Option )
Brand new A-E HD Full Woven Clutch Disc (10-1/8", 23 spline)
Brand new A-E Release Bearing
Brand new A-E Pilot Bearing
Alignment Tool

Anyone know if this is what I am looking for. Manual trans are not easy to find in these things so getting information on them is just as hard. The questions are with the Pressure Plate and the Clutch disc. Is a Non-self adjusting pressure plate what I need and is that the right specs for the clutch disc?

I found this clutch at advance and a friend of mine said he would give me my "former" employee discount :icon_thumby:

I am not familiar with clutches so this is going to be a learning experience for me. I tried posting this on another explorer forum but got no response so I was hoping yall could help me out. I don't have the truck locally and I would like to have the clutch with me so I can do it all in one days work or maybe two. If it was more convenient for me to get to the truck I would have removed the clutch already and checked it but I guess if yall can't help me I'll have to do that. Thanks for the help!

From what I've quickly searched, both X and E engines use the 10 1/8" clutch.

It is HIGHLY recommended that you replace the slave cylinder at the same time.

The slave is good advise.Test that your hydraulic line plugs into your slave couple different ones.Let the tranny hang underneath extensions to get to the bell housing bolts.

Thanks for the advice. This is going to be a learning experience for me so hopefully everything will go smoothly. I have taken off 3 days from work next week so itll give me a little time to work on it.

Hey also another thing when I was trying out the explorer's 4x4 it worked on flat ground and then I tried to climb a small hill and as I was going up it the explorer quit moving. I had it revved up to 3000 rpms and it wasn't moving. The tires wouldn't spin and after a few seconds smoke began to come out from underneath the truck which I am assuming is the clutch. Any ideas why this happened?

Worn out clutch.

The extra load from the other 2 tires and pulling the truck uphill, was its final round.

Btw... This is a bad idea.
Spend the extra and find the right parts from a local store. There's a big chance you might need the warranty, especially with the slave cylinder.

I am a fan of the slave offered by Advance. It has an external clip on the quick disconnect, that very easily comes apart every time. That's a big plus for me because my transmission is removed 5-7 times a year for one reason or another.

yeah the clutch I am getting from ebay it is the same brand that I have found in a local parts store just a little cheaper online. The slave cylinder I am buying from Advance Auto. They had it for $45 so thats not too bad compared to the $225-250 clutch. Also my explorer is losing oil somewhere because when I bought it there wasn't any in it. I was thinking about replacing the rear main seal while I had the transmission out. Any tips or advice on the rear main seal? Never done one so again its a learning experience or a disaster waiting to happen :icon_thumby:

O yeah and the clutch has a 12 month/ 12,000 mile warranty

id spend a couple extra bucks and get one from napa, theyre luk brand, which is what ford uses from the factory... some use little plastic bushings rather than springs, and you typically get what you pay for. also, if you can find either a raybestos slave or oem ford one.... they price difference isnt that much, but its worth it.

almost forgot about the flywheel, for about $80 i would replace that if your clutch was that bad... also from napa.

You'll see, when you go to disconnect your clutch line.
