I have a 1993 Ford Ranger 4x4. XLT model with the extended cab. 4.0L engine with a Manual transmission. It has the F27A-ZA or Mazda M5R1 transmission with a 13-54 Borg Warner Electric Transfer case. So I have manual lock-outs on the front wheels but I engage the 4x4 hi and low by pushing a button on the dash.

Long story shorter. I'm needing to replace the transmission and probably the transfer case.

So I'm wondering what I may be able to substitute in place of these in terms of other transmissions and transfer cases and in different years?

I'd like to keep it simple. If I can find the same exact parts at a bone yard, I'll do so. However, I'm open to options that may be more readily available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Welcome to The Ranger Station!

It's all about the speedometer in your case.

Since your speedo needs the cable driven, crawl under the truck and see where the speedo cable connects to.

If it connects to the transfer case, you can use any year 4.0 MO5D and retain your transfer case. If it connects to the transmission itself, then you are limited to up to 95 4.0 MO5D. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/speedometer.htm <I wish that link had more specific info on where each year/version got the cable connected to.

The 4.0 MO5D can be taken from Explorer, Navajo, or Ranger.

I'm unsure whether you can bolt up the newer SOHC MO5D. Some say you can but one bolt doesn't line up. If that's the case, get the newest trans you can find, with low mileage.

One other thing that Earl stated but did not stress... The m5od must come from a 4.0 donor. The transmissions on smaller engines are different even if they are an m5od.

I appreciate the advice. I'm almost certain the speedo connects to the transfer case. Given that the 4x4 is electronic push button and that I have a BW 13-54 electrically activated transfer case. I'll take another look though to be sure.

I'm thinking it'll likely be simplest to replace the same parts with the same parts. I was thinking of getting a manually activated transfer case but there'd be drilling and modding, etc. Not really wanting to invest that kind of time and hassle.
