Not 100% on this truck we are discussing.....theres no reason to unhook anything, loosen anything or open any valves. turn on the key, wait a few seconds till the pump kicks back off, turn off the key. repeat several times. any air in the lines or filter or whatever will all be forced through the system, back out the return and into the tank. you should hear a noticeable change in the pitch of the pump as it builds pressure.
you say it has pressure at the rail. how much pressure? did you put a gauge on it? was it fuel or air coming out of the schrader valve?
according to his profile its an 88 2.9l, back in high school i ran my 2.9 dry more than once and never had any issues starting it afterwards other than taking a few extra seconds cranking over. starting to wonder if the fuel pump picked something up thats got it jammed. Not 100% on this truck we are discussing.....
BUT I AM 100% on my truck, I HAVE to bleed the air out of the schrader valve or it will NOT restart.
