I have a 99 ford ranger V6 4.0 4x4 xlt.im in the process of attempting to troubleshoot the issue of why it wont shift in to reverse. i would much rather fix the problem then buy a new trans it is an automatic.

I'm assuming when you say it won't shift into reverse you mean when you put it in reverse it doesn't move. That said, the rear band is not applying and this usually a precursor to complete failure, at least in my 40yrs experience working on my own automatics. You might get a pro to chime in that does trans rebuilding for a living and tell me I'm full of @#$%%:dunno:

Some common causes of no reverse in the 5r55e:

- blown valve body gasket around the reverse servo.
- broken reverse band.
- (anyone else care to add to the list?)

Do you have all the other gears? Or can you not move the shifter past the park position? If its the first one the tranny is probably going to have to come out, but if its the second it s most likely just a bad break switch and that is a quick easy fix.
