Can you give us a little more info on the truck, e.g. is it running at all, etc?

I have an OBD1 code reader for my 1987 2.9. At first I couldn't get it to work but found out that someone had evidently switched the wires in the connector ( they can be moved by depressing the small clip in the connector). I finally got a photo showing which wires went where and got it working. I don't know anything about the equis code reader but assume the connector should be the same - but maybe not.

The chances of it telling you the cause of "cranks but does not crank over" are none. Tell us more about the situation and let us help. You're beating a dead horse with your scanner.

This is going to be a fuel or spark issue.

It cranks over but does not start correct? Or is starts up but runs poorly?

Have you checked for spark at the coil? Do you have fuel pressure at the schrader?

Pull the coil wire off the distributor, if you have an extra spark plug laying around plug it into the wire and lay it against something metal on the engine that is a good ground.

You can also put something like a screw driver in the end and hold it near a ground. Crank the engine and watch for a spark to jump the gap.
