View Full Version : side exit before rear tire

I went into an exhaust shop to get a quote on getting a custom exhaust done there and i told them i wanted a side exit before the rear tire. The guy i was talking to told me that it was probably illegal to put the exit there becuz its too close to the cab. He didnt seem entirely sure, so i thought i would ask becuz thats what i want on my ranger.

depends on local laws more than anything. as long as you leave your cat converters alone, your fine from a federal standpoint.
id run down to the local cop shop and see what they have to say...most likely they wont care.

thanks, i figured it wouldnt be a big deal. The mechanic also said that he would have to move the muffler forward a bit to allow a side exit there and that would cause lowing the muffler an inch or two. not sure if that would look gay as aids or what. im gonna see what i can do when i go back in there.

:icon_rofl:
thats a new one on me.
the muffler will move down a little since the exhuast is lower towards the front of the truck...but it shouldnt be too big of a deal.

Should be fine, law states it must be behind the cab, mine's right behind the door on my B2 but its behind any openable window, emissions guys didn't say anything, and cops haven't bothered me. I've had it for a year.

I have mine exiting on the side, not far in front of the rear tire. I'm gonna post a couple pics of it so you can see what it looks like and where it'll sit.
It'll look better on a Ranger thats not got body damage all over it, and has paint thats in better shape. Yeah, this is the project truck....lol

ya i gota a question about side exit exhaust i want to do i on mine but i have to have a muffler and i dont have alot of space after the muffler and before the back wheel well but if u throw a 45 right off the muffler and put the tip on, the tip will be underneath the leak spring mount is that a problem cuz i didnt want to put it on and it break or something?

I've always had size exit exhuast on my truck. As long as you have the exhuast exiting behind the cab and out from under the truck it will almost always be legal. Turndowns aren't usually legal. You can run into issues with the leaf spring. Back when I was in high school I had Monroe install one with that problem. After bending it and having them fix it half a dozen times I ripped it off and threw it in their parking lot. I have one with the V8 as well. I'll look for some pics for you.

Thanks, Wicked :icon_thumby:
hihoslvr, for me the reason for the dual exit pipes is twofold. The first, and most important to me, was cosmetic. I hold a strong dislike for single-pipe exhaust. Secondly, I believe that having large diameter tips helps to cancel out higher frequency noise. Which means it sounds less like a Rice Burner. In all, I have 7" of "pipe" back there (two 3 1/2" tips) and it sounds absoluetly nothing like a ricer until I get to higher RPMs. I've actually had a couple people ask me if I was running a 5.0 under the hood.
Besides that, it all depends on the motor. No two motors sound the same. Ever.
As far as legality is concerned, as long as your exhaust exits behind the cab, you should be fine.

the tip will be underneath the leak spring mount
it'll be OK under the front spring mount, there isnt much movement of the leaf spring at that point. just give it a few inches clearence and you'll be fine.

that ain't bad for 15 bones... still not quite my style, I'd like to just pull the hood off, and have some pipes comin' strainght outta the manifold, hot rod style, that'd be cool! Probably not so good for the windsheild though :3gears:

my whole exhaust system cost me very little. $110 to have the stock cats cut out, and one high-flow put in its place, and later on it cost me $167.34 to order Two Magnaflow 3 1/2" tips, about 6 feet of pipe, the glasspack, and the labor for installation.

FWIW, my company truck which is a 97 F150 6 cyl 2wd 5 spd has the factory pipes on it and it is routed out before the pass rear tire. Ford had problems with that set-up cause the condensation from the exhuast pitted the RR rims. but it was still factory

my original true dual setup cost me under $100 for all the pipe (straight and pre-bent sections), 2 glasspacks, all hangers and clamps, and 2 chrome tips.
of coarse it had crush bends, developed a new leak at a different clamped joint about once a month, and only lasted about a year and a half before the cheap, thin-walled pipe rotted and fell off . the secont time around was professionally installed with thick-walled aluminized pipe, mendral bends, and welded joints.

I too am interested in that style of exhaust. Any price and/or horsepower info?
Twizzler09

First, way to revive a dead thread...haha =p
Second, as for price its going to vary. Side-Exit exhaust is completely custom work, as I know of no company that makes a cat-back side exit setup. The best way to know what its going to cost you is to go to your local exhaust shop, tell em what you want, and see what their asking price is.
Third, power gains from simple cat-back modifications on RBVs are going to be minimal. The engines dont put out enough power to make non-restrictive exhaust a nessecity, or even much more than simple fun. If your looking for actual numbers, dont believe the dynosheets that Magnaflow or Flowmaster display on their websites. They are quite often inflated.
If your looking to get some extra oomph from your 4.0 Mazda.... I'd suggest installing a set of headers. The stock manifolds are somewhat restrictive...but not a whole lot. JBA and Pacesetter both do a set of headers for the 4.0 SOHC motor, and at least Pacesetter does (or used to) a set for the 4.0 OHV.
After you install the Headers would probably the best time to have the custom side-exits installed. Or do both at once. Its up to you. I only put the exhaust on mine because I like being loud....:icon_thumby:

Yeah don't expect any power. The custom bent pipe for mine was $20 at an exhaust shop, and then a bunch of my time to make it work.

i will have to say that depending on what state u live in this idea is bad. i used to live in buffalo, new york and i had a straight piped 2.3 witha glass pack cut bfor the axle. well cops hate that kinda thing up here. ive had two exhaust tickets in a matter of 1 month. then i moved out into the country changed my exhaust to run out the back with a import 3a racing muffler. It def was a better idea. With the side exit idea u get a lot of fumes and make a hell of a lot of nice like that. Granted i still do but i suggest goin out the back my ticket issue is going away along with prolonged brain activity lol. i just thought i would give my two cents.

just another tidbit, I put on a dynomax muffler and cut it short and dumped it out before the rear wheel, but... i have a cap, the emissions guys told me it was illegal because i can technically ride people around back there, so I had to spend 150 getting it back to original set up. still got the muffler but it sounded a bit better to me when it didnt have to go through so much pipe...

That's retarded, the stock pipe still doesn't exit "behind" the bed  . A lot of stock F150s had before tire exits, so if you put a canopy on one of those is that illegal?
I just put a 40 series on my Dakota, before the rear tire just like my B2, sounds awesome. Never been bothered at emissions with my B2 so I don't expect to be bothered with my Dakota.

depending on the state the exhaust exit requirements are dif. here in la the law says over the axle and exit the vehicle, dumps and b4 the tire are illegal. anything catless or w/ glasspacks (classified as not mufflers here) is not legal either. we dont have emissions but those are our rules. most cops dont bother w/ the tkts unless it is rediculously loud in city limits. the only exception to the front of tire dump is if the vehicle had it installed from the factory, roush edition mustangs and f150s were the only exceptions here, and if the exhaust was modified in any way (new mufflers, tips or cat changes) the law said it had to be dumped over the axle and exit the vehicle anyway. if the setup was chosen to be changed, you had to change it the whole way, i know a person that does inspections and lets me do as i damn well so im not worried about it. lucky me...

For a while the F-150 had a side exit exhaust in front of the rear tire from the factory.
Generally speaking, most state laws require the exhaust to exit behind the rear-most opening window.
Sasquatch_Ryda

Yes but there was a TSB for the exhuast on the 97-98 f150's with that exhaust as it was cauising the rims to corrode and disscolor as well as rusting up the brakes pretty bad. They replaced it with a full length tail pipe that was behind the rear tire.
