how to remove ford emblem off of 91 tailgate plate?

How do you remove the ford emblem off of the tailgate plate tht goees across the tailgate on my 91 I want to change the color of it but can't get it off? How does it come off? What's holding it on?thanks
 
Drop the tail gate, take the bed-liner piece off the inside of the gate (if equipped) and then remove the plate that is there around the top 1/3 of the gate. That will give you access to everything inside the gate, including the nuts that hold the emblem on. It probably has some sort of double-sided tape on it as well, but who knows it that is any good any more.
 
Don't know about the early ones but later ones have two locating pins and just use double sided tape to hold them on. I used rubbing alcohol and heat gun to soften it up and pried it off with the tool used to open paint cans. Small block of wood with tape as the pivot point. Some use a fishing line and work it behind for removal/

Yeah, I know a lot of the newer ones do. For some reason I am thinking there are press nuts on the back of those dowels on the older ones.

Even if there aren't, sometime getting at those pins makes it easier to get the emblem off.
 
Dental floss or fishing line.
