31 spline L/S carrier in 28 spline 8.8?

I am picking up a L/S carrier out of an explorer for free. I know my ranger has different spline count axles but I was wondering if I could swap out the side gears in the carrier to fit my axle shafts? Is that the only difference between the two? I want to get it locked up but a free limited slip may be a good alternative until I can afford to do that. Thanks.

Getting a 31spline 8.8 out if an exploder is very cheap. Would give you the added strength, etc.

I don't think the carrier can be interchanged like that. If you can get it to work let us know. I'd like to know if you can just for shits and grins.

No. At least not possible in the open diffs because the side gear hub diameters are different, I suspect the same in the LS carrier.
