i am in the middle of replacing my cluth and found my rear main oil seal to be leaking. i have never changed one of these and was told i need to take out my whole engine to replace this damn thing.... anyone got any different ways?

Yeah,
It can be removed a couple ways, assuming your Ranger is the same as my BII and I can't see any difference. I pulled mine caerfully with a screw driver and some angled pics, and well a small hammer too. Once I got it out I cleaned the area up the best I could and then put rtv around the new seal and tapped it into place, no too hard at all. I know some say you have to drop the oil pan down and you can't really do that without pulling the motor due to the engine cross member so you have to lift up or pull out the motor. But in my case I was able to do it without needing to do that on my 87 BII. Oh yeah I also used a seal puller too once I got it loose from around the crank. Do be carefull though as a scratch or gouge on the crank will let it leak. Good luck!
