View Full Version : ABS light won't turn off

The ABS light on the Explorer won't turn off. This all started a few weeks ago when my A/C kept blowing the fuse. After some troubleshooting, I determined it was the A/C WOT relay. To confirm this, I swapped one of the ABS relays with the A/C relay. Sure enough, the A/C has not blown a fuse since, but the ABS light went on. So I bought a new relay and installed it in the ABS slot. The light stayed out for about a day, but then came back on. I checked all the fuses and they're ok. The light will turn on for a few seconds when I first start the truck, like it should. It stays off until I start driving. Within the first few seconds of moving, it turns on and stays on.

Since the light stays out until the truck starts moving, I'm thinking it might just be a sensor and that it just coincidentally happened after this relay fiasco. Is there a way to check ABS codes with an OBD1 system?

Is your brake fluid reservoir full?

Yup it's full.

I guess I should add that the parking brake light works correctly, and it's JUST the ABS light that won't turn off.

I had this problem with my Ranger. Under the master cylinder mounted on the frame rail is the RABS control module. I found that I had been dripping oil on this connector during oil changes and I had opened a connection. I pulled the plug out, hit both connectors with an electrical contact cleaner and let the dry. Neatened them up with electrical tape afterwards to add a bit of extra protection. Don't forget to disconnect the positive battery terminal before doing this! Hope it helps!
